Only 35% of consumers enrolled in wellness programs engage in them at least once per week, according to a new report by HealthMine. This is despite an $8 billion annual investment in wellness programs by U.S. health sponsors (Kaiser Family Foundation). Rather than focusing on lifestyle management, wellness programs should start using big data to identify current or developing health conditions in a population. Small data--including member reactions and motivations--are also important to boost engagement and close gaps in care.

Despite efforts by healthcare providers to faciliate patient access to health data online, 53% of U.S. consumers said they couldn't access all of their health data from a computer, according to a recent HealthMine survey. Yet 74 percent of respondents said easy electronic access to health data would improve their knowledge of their health and improve communication with their physicians.

Each smoker costs their employer $5,800 more in annual healthcare costs than the average employee. Yet most employers aren't addressing the problem. Sixty-six percent (66%) of consumers enrolled in a sponsored wellness program said their program does not include a medical test for nicotine use, according to a recent survey of 750 wellness program participants. What's more, 57 percent said their wellness plan does not offer a smoking cessation program.

Patient engagement outside of the clinical setting is key to closing gaps in care. A recent HealthMine survey found that 74% of insured consumers believe easy electronic access to their healthcare data would enhance their understanding of their care as well as improve communication with their physicians. Personalized communication using technology can also play an important role.

Most people with chronic conditions say they are not concerned with their health, according to a recent survey by Parks Associates. Engagement is the problem for healthcare sponsors and their members. While mobile tools may hold part of the answer, they are not delivering just yet. HealthMine found that about 60 percent of consumers are dealing with a chronic condition, but while many have access to digital health tools and workplace wellness programs, only 7 percent are using them for health management.
